character.
CHARACTER NAME: Viral
SERIES: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
CANON POINT: The end of episode 15.
AGE: n/a. Viral is a genetic construct so we can’t be sure of his actual age. If you had to put a number on it, he appears to maybe be in his early 20s.
APPEARANCE: Such a handsome lad

PERSONALITY:
Viral is a beastman, a genetic construct created by the Spiral Kind, Lordgenome, and served as the Vice Commander of the Human Eradication Squad, Viral’s purpose was destroy the human population on the surface of his home world. Dispatched to the Far East Theater to deal with a group of humans who had been stealing their Gunmen robots to fight back, Viral encounters Kamina, Simon and the rest of the Dai Gurren Brigade. This began his rivalry with Kamina and the brigade, fighting them several times on his own and under the command of the four Supreme Generals. Every time, Viral went at them with everything he had, and every time, the humans brought him defeat, and even the death of some of his generals.

If nothing else, Viral is a loyal and honorable soldier in his King’s army. His rivalry with Kamina and his desire for revenge further fueled the fire in him to fight against the humans with every fiber of his being. However, during their battle inside Supreme General Cytomander’s Dai-Gunten, Viral discovered that Kamina had died, and all along he had been fighting Simon and Yoko. They were the ones who were responsible for the deaths of his generals and all his crushing defeats, not Kamina. When Cytomander intervenes in the battle and takes Yoko hostage and orders Viral to kill a helpless Simon, Viral refuses. Killing them wouldn’t restore the honor he had lost.

When the fight is over, Cytmomander drags Viral back to the Spiral King and calls for him to be executed for his treason. Viral does not argue his fate, but does make a last request to his king. What are humans? How were they able to defeat them over and over again, and why were they still fighting them? Lordgenome decides to grant this wish, and takes Viral aside to teach him about the truth behind humans, and the existence of the beastmen. Instead of an execution, Viral is granted immortality by Lordgenome.

Assuming his new gift was to find revenge against the Dai Gurren Brigade, Viral fights as viciously as ever when they arrive in Teppelin and the Spiral King’s throne room. Despite this, Simon once again manages to defeat him. It is then that Lordgenome informs Viral that he’s mistaken - he wasn’t made immortal for revenge, but to tell the tale of the Spiral King’s win over the humans, to tell his story and warn future humans who may try to rise against him. Disabled from the battle, all Viral can do is watch as Lordgenome is defeated by Simon the Dai Gurren Brigade. Teppelin falls, seemingly taking Viral with it. It’s this point where he’ll be entering Exitvoid.

More than anything, Viral is an honorable soldier. His purpose is to fight for the supremacy of the beastmen and Lordgenome, and he would fulfill his orders without question. He believed fully in their purpose and fought alongside each general to the best of his ability, even after each one was soundly defeated. Despite the repeated defeats and humiliation, he continues to press on. Maybe these losses are due to some extraordinary bad luck, or because a beastman has no chance against humans who possess great Spiral Energy as Lordgenome tells him.

While he may be honorable, Viral is very prideful and his fiery temper often takes over. It rears its head when fighting with Kamina and the Dai Gurren Brigade; while he goes on at them about how an honorable fight is the most important thing to a beastman, he’s not totally against underhanded fighting to get himself ahead. He knows the right time to reign his temper, though. When being berated by General Adiane for his failures in battle, he attempts to apologize, and continues to do so even while she violently assaults him. When Cytomander calls for his execution, he accepts it without question. His ego may be big, but he still knows his place.

Now, with Teppelin fallen, Viral will be entering the game with his entire worldview shattered. With his king defeated and the beastmen defeated by humans, what is his purpose in the world now? Lordgenome has made him immortal in order to spread the story of his victory over humans, but with his death, Viral’s purpose is now obsolete. His start in Exitvoid will be a fresh one, and he’ll have to learn to put his pride aside to work with the humans (and not-so-humans) in order to get by. A skilled survivalist by nature, he will have a good chance of traversing the changing landscape or whatever events are thrown his way. the real challenge will come when getting along with his citizens.

ABILITIES:
Viral is immortal, and heals almost instantly from most wounds. I understand in this game he can still “die”, which is reasonable, and a lesson he better learn fast. His immortal body also means he doesn’t need to sleep. Without his immortal body, his body would eventually start to decay on a cellular level, as all beastmen do, sending them into a coma. Other than that, Viral has that are more keen than the average humans, due to his animal nature. He’s also a fierce and fast hand-to-hand and melee fighter, built and bred to be a soldier.

POSSESSIONS:
Only what’s seen in his above-linked picture - his clothes and his cleaver.
